Rabat – The National Food Safety Authority seized almost a total of two million tons of products unfit for consumption found in local markets, imports and exports.
The ONSSA confiscated 290 tons of unfit products out of the 85,000 tons overseen by Office’s brigades during the first four months of 2017.
These include 240 tons of red and white meat, 47 tons of fishery products, 2 tons of milk and dairy products and one ton of various food products.
In March alone, the Office’s inspectors carried an on-the-ground investigation which resulted in the seizure and destruction of 478 tons of products unfit for consumption, including 320 tons of red and white meat, 152 tons of fishery products, two tons of milk and milk products and four tons of various food products.
The ONSSA inspectors made 5,600 visits, 1,200 of which were in provincial and prefectural commissions.
The ONSSA also reports that 221 cases for trial have been sent to the public prosecutor’s office.
In terms of imported products unfit for consumption, the investigators seized a quantity of 1,625,000 tons of foods.
The Board’s services have recalled 59 tons of products for non-compliance with regulatory requirements.
In terms of exports, 222,150 tons of products were overseen and 10,460 sanitary and phytosanitary certificates were issued.
As part of its preventive program, ONSSA has issued 96 sanitary approvals and authorizations to establishments and food businesses, resulting in 5,239 establishments authorized to date.
In addition, 1,100 follow-up health visits were carried out to verify compliance with and maintenance of sanitary requirements in establishments already approved and authorized by ONSSA.
The inspectors carried out 5,546 field visits, including 1,110 in joint provincial and prefectural commissions.
During the first months of 2017, 934 certificates of sanitary approval for the national transport of perishable products were issued by the ONSSA.
