Rabat – US President Donald Trump’s insults have inspired a Mexican businessman to create Trump toilet paper which will be marketed under the slogan ‘softness without borders.’
Antonio Battaglia, a corporate lawyer, came up with the idea after Donald Trump insulted Mexicans and said he was “really bothered” by Trump’s campaign rhetoric which included the characterization of migrants entering the US as criminals, drug smugglers and rapists.
In an interview with the Spanish language CNN Expansión Battaglia explained, “It annoyed me and I started to look for a way to do something that would have an impact, not in a tone of mocking or revenge but in a positive way.”
According to Mexico’s Institute of Industrial Property, the Trump Organization did not register a trademark for “hygienic paper” despite holding rights in construction, hotels, tourism, real estate and financial services sectors. This oversight by the Trump Organization allowed for the possibility of Trump toilet paper which was reportedly approved in October 2015.
A sample package design pokes fun at the US president. Lettering indicates that each package contains four “puros rollos” which translates to “pure rolls” but can also be understood in Spanish to mean “pure nonsense.” The packaging also includes a cartoon likeness of Trump with characteristic blond hair, a grinning face and enthusiastic thumbs up.
The initial production of Trump toilet paper will be small but if there is enough demand Battaglia hopes to manufacture more. The initial production contract is worth about 400,000 pesos (about $21,400) and will produce about two cargo trucks full of the product.
Battaglia also hopes to help those targeted by Trump with profits from the toilet paper. He hopes to give up to 30 percent of proceeds from Trump toilet paper, to organization that help migrants and deportees.
For customers eager to try the product, Trump toilet paper is set to hit stores in Mexico by the end of the year.
