Rabat – Spain have advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals after eliminating Portugal in a tense round-of-16 meeting at Dallas Stadium.
The result ended Portugal’s campaign and brought down the curtain on Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup appearance.
Ronaldo, 41, had said before the match that this would be his last World Cup, turning the game against Spain into one of the most emotional nights of his international career.
Ronaldo’s last dance ends
For Ronaldo, the match carried more weight than a normal knockout game.
He was facing Spain, the country where he spent the biggest years of his club career with Real Madrid.
He also had a famous World Cup history against Spain, including his hat-trick in the 3-3 draw between the two teams in 2018.
But this time, Spain had the final word.
Portugal entered the match hoping to extend Ronaldo’s dream of winning the only major trophy missing from his career.
Instead, Spain ended that dream and moved one step closer to the semifinals.
Spain came into the game with momentum after beating Austria 3-0 in the previous round.
Luis de la Fuente’s team had been growing into the tournament after a slow start in the group stage.
Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Rodri and Dani Olmo gave Spain quality and control, while Mikel Oyarzabal continued to lead the attack.
Spain were seen as one of the strongest teams left in the competition before facing Portugal.
Portugal fall short
Portugal reached the round of 16 after beating Croatia 2-1.
Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot in that match, becoming the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout game.
That goal kept his World Cup story alive for one more match.
But against Spain, Portugal could not find the decisive moment needed to keep their campaign alive.
The defeat will be painful for Portugal because of the quality in their squad and the emotional weight of Ronaldo’s farewell.
End of an era
Ronaldo’s World Cup journey began in 2006 and stretched across six tournaments.
He became the first player to score in six different World Cups and remains one of the biggest figures in the history of the game.
But the World Cup trophy never came.
Spain’s win now sends them into the quarterfinals, where they will face either the United States or Belgium.
For Portugal, the tournament is over.
For Ronaldo, the last dance on football’s biggest stage has ended.
