Rabat – The threats of Amazigh activist Malika Mezzane against Arabs have not gone unnoticed by Mohamed Fizazi, a prominent Moroccan Salafi sheikh.

In a video that circulated on social media in the past few days, the Amazigh poet and activist warned Arabs that they would be “slaughtered” by the Amazigh people if they did not allow Kurds to create their own state in northern Iraq.

Fizazi called Mezzane’s controversial statements “despicable” and “racist.”

“I am very sad to see that racism and hatred discourse has reached this beloved country,” he said in a video posted on Youtube  on Sunday.

The Salafi scholar said that Mezzane had committed a “felony” by inciting violence and murder, and he asserted that racism was not acceptable in Islam.

The activist’s video was posted to show support for the Kurds as they prepare to hold a referendum on September 25 on independence from Iraq.

The move was rejected by the central Iraqi government which vowed to “not let Iraq be divided.”

Amazigh activists have for long identified themselves with the Kurdish people in the Arab world as they say that both ethnicities have suffered marginalization at the hands of Arab regimes.

However, some Amazigh activists, as it is the case with, show anti-Arab sentiments. Following her controversial statements, Mezzane was reportedly interrogated by the National Brigade of Judiciary Investigations (BNPJ).

“We’ll create chaos and slaughter Arabs, one after one, especially those in the Gulf,” says Mezzane in the infamous video.

Her threats, seen as an incitement to violence and hatred, were widely condemned on social media.
