Rabat – Copper wires have been stolen from a high speed train (TGV) rail line in Ouled Abdellah, 35 km north of Kenitra, media sources reported.
The Maghreb Arab Press (MAP) stated that investigation led by unit of the Gendaremerie National on Saturday led to the seizure of a pick-up truck used for transporting the stolen wires, as well as other equipment employed in the theft.
Six suspects have been identified and are currently subject of a search warrant, MAP affirmed.
Stealing copper wires from rail lines, which can be resold at high prices, is a common practice not only in Morocco but in countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, or the UK.
In August, a British media online outlet reported that thieves had stolen, over a period of six weeks, GBP 90,000 worth of copper cable from rail lines across Staffordshire in the English West Midlands.
