Rabat– Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch participated on Thursday in a high-level meeting organized by FIFA to discuss preparations for the 2030 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.

The meeting, convened at the request of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, also brought together Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel. It took place at FIFA’s New York office in the Trump Tower, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Akhannouch said that  the session was a chance for the three host nations to review the progress of preparations for the global football event.

The prime minister also emphasized Morocco’s advanced infrastructure projects, ambitious initiatives, and comprehensive reforms underway in key sectors, under the guidance of King Mohammed VI.

The discussion further addressed the establishment of the “Morocco 2030 Foundation,” which will serve as a liaison with the government to oversee the implementation of programs related to the World Cup’s organization.

Akhannouch concluded by noting that these strategic projects, aimed at benefiting local communities, are expected to have a lasting impact beyond the 2030 World Cup.

The international tournament will mark a historic first, being hosted across three countries, an unprecedented arrangement that reflects a shared commitment to strengthening cultural and international ties.

For Madrid, Rabat, and Lisbon, this joint project goes beyond the realm of sport, sending a powerful message of unity and global cooperation.

Trump Tower also convened FIFA officials with South American football leaders this week to discuss a formal proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams.

The suggestion, first raised by Uruguayan Football Federation president Ignacio Alonso during the “any other business” section of a FIFA council meeting in March, has sparked debate within the world of international football.
