Election participation is compulsory in Brazil.
Bolsonaro received criticism throughout the election campaign because of his views on minorities, the LGBT community, and women.
He once told a fellow congresswoman that she did not deserve to be raped because she was “very ugly.”
He also stirred controversy after he announced his intention to move the Brazilian embassy in Israel to Jerusalem after he won the election.
“As previously stated during our campaign, we intend to transfer the Brazilian Embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem. Israel is a sovereign state and we shall duly respect that,” he said.
