Rabat – Authorities at the Santiago de Compostela Airport in western Spain have confiscated seven fossils from a passenger arriving from Morocco.
Spanish news outlet La Voz de Galicia reported on January 12 that airport authorities discovered the fossils in the passenger’s luggage during an inspection. The passenger had not declared the items to customs.
The passenger claimed to have purchased the fossils from several locations throughout Morocco but did not have tickets or invoices to prove the legality of the acquisitions.
Consequently, the Spanish Civil Guard reported the passenger for an alleged violation of the country’s smuggling laws. If found guilty, the passenger may be considered a perpetrator of a crime against Morocco’s historical heritage.
Spain has requested that Moroccan authorities aid the investigation.
