Rabat – Spanish trade union Manos Limpias (Clean Hands) has filed a complaint against Polisario leader Brahim Ghali for using fake documentation to enter Spain.
The complaint resulted in a preliminary proceeding against Ghali from the investigating court in Logrono, Spain.
“The facts as presented contain clues which show the presumed existence of an offense of falsifying public documents,” said a judge in the Logrono court.
Brahim Ghali secretly entered Spain on April 18 after the Spanish government and Algeria arranged his trip.
Ghali used a fake identity and an Algeian diplomatic passport under the name Mohamed Ben Battouche to enter Spain.
He used the fake name to circumvent legal charges against him, including charges for genocide, torture, illegal detention, and rape.
Despite all the complaints against the Polisario chief, the Spanish National Court dismissed the charges and allowed Ghali to leave Spain.
The Spanish court claimed that there was not enough evidence to convict him.
Ghali’s admission to Spain caused an unprecedented crisis between Rabat and Madrid.
Following the Spanish court’s controversial acquittal of Ghali, all eyes are on Morocco to see how the North African country will respond to what many Moroccan officials have already described as an affront.
The Spanish decision angered not only Morocco but also social networks users across the world.
Twitter users launched a campaign accusing the Spanish government of protecting Brahim Ghali despite his well-documented association with serious criminal offenses, including war crimes and torture.
On various social media platforms in Morocco, the hashtag #Spain_protect_criminal is rapidly becoming a trending topic.
