Rabat- Morocco has renewed its unwavering position and constant support for the inter-Libyan dialogue.
The commitment’s renewal followed the arrival of the Libyan High Council of State Khaled El Mechri and the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh Issa in Rabat on Thursday.
Hakim Benchamach, the speaker of Morocco’s House of Councillors, received Mechri in Rabat and emphasized the country’s decision to support all efforts seeking to overcome the obstacles that hinder the consolidation of a consensual political solution between all parties.
“Morocco is committed and involved in strengthening the dialogue between the Libyan brothers in order to reach a final settlement to the crisis,” Benchamach told Mechri on Thursday.
He emphasized that Morocco believes that a consensual political solution remains the only way out of the crisis.
Benchamach also reiterated that Rabat has total confidence in the ability of the Libyans to reach a final solution that satisfies all parties and that meets the aspirations of the Libyan people for security, stability, and development.
Al Mechri emphasized Morocco’s role, saying that the country’s aid has been “decisive in bringing together points of view between the different parties and the outcome of consensus likely to pave the way for a final political settlement of the Libyan crisis.”
Al Mechri emphasized that Morocco offered all the conditions to the Libyan parties to reach an important consensus, citing the Skhirat agreement.
Morocco also held several roundtables in Bouznika and Tangier.
Following months of consultations and talks in Morocco, the political parties said they reached a comprehensive agreement on the criteria and objectives for assuming positions of sovereignty.
Under the agreement, the Libyan parties vowed to continue the dialogue launched in Morocco and plan to meet at different events to finalize the agreement.
Morocco repeatedly expressed its continued determination to engage in the UN-led political process to help Libyans find a solution to end the humanitarian crisis in the neighbouring country.
Rabat, however, continues to condemn foreign military intervention, emphasizing that a solution to Libya should be discussed by Libyans themselves.
The continuous consultative visits by Libyan rival parties in Morocco reaffirms the country’s key role as part of the international efforts that seek to see a stable Libya.
The visits also came after Germany disregarded Morocco’s peacekeeping efforts, which led to the subsequent suspension of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Germany.
In 2020, Morocco’s Ministry of Forein Affairs expressed its astonishment after Germany excluded the country from taking part in the first Berlin conference on January 19.
Morocco cited the exclusion in its recent decision to recall its ambassador from Berlin.
In the statement, Morocco also expressed dissatisfaction with Germany for “countering Morocco’s regional influence, particularly on the Libyan issue.”
Morocco argued that it has always been at the “forefront of international efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis.”
The ministry noted its key role in the conclusion of the Skhirat agreement, which has served as the main political framework in finding a solution to the conflict in Libya.
