Rabat – the Moroccan athlete, Soufiane El Bakkali, won the 3,000 meters steeplechase race at the 2021 Rome Diamond league on June 10, breaking the world’s fastest time record of the season.
The Diamond League is a series of field athletic competitions that take place every year. The first competition took place in 2010 and replaced the IAAF Golden League, organized in 1998.
Soufiane El Bakkali’s timing for the 3,000 meters steeplechase race was 8:08.54, ranking as first in the category.
He outperformed Ethiopian athlete Takele Bikila Tadese, who recorded 8:10.56, followed by fellow Moroccan athlete Tindouft Mohammed who scored 8:11.65.
At just 18 years old, Soufiane El Bakkali made his debut in athletics by ranking fourth in the World Junior Championships in 2014.
He previously won a silver medal at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London and a bronze medal at Doha’s 2019 competition. In 2016, he was ranked fourth in the race at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Soufiane’s El Bakkali achievements have carved him the reputation of a renowned athlete. He is the only Moroccan athlete qualified for sponsorship by team VISA for Tokyo’s 2021 Olympics, postponed because of the COVID 19 pandemic and scheduled to take place on July 21.
