Rabat – Despite being one of the tournament co-hosts, England is not guaranteed a place in the UEFA Euro 2028.
A total of 24 teams are competing in the 2028 Euro, with 32 of the matches played in England. However, none of the four co-hosts, including England, Wales, the Republic of Ireland, and Scotland, will automatically qualify.
There will be 12 groups, and every group winner plus the eight best runners-up will qualify for the 2028 Euro.
If England fails to qualify through the regular process, UEFA has reserved two spots for the highest-ranked host nations that fail to win their group or qualify as one of the best runners-up. So, while they do not have automatic qualification, they are still in a strong position to earn a place.
According to ESPN, England will miss Euro 2028 only if they fail to win their group or finish among the best runners-up, and if two of Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland perform better under UEFA’s ranking criteria for the reserved host places.
FIFA, on the other hand, decided that each host of the 2030 World Cup would automatically participate in the tournament.
Although the 2030 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, the opening three matches will take place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, with each country hosting one game. This arrangement is part of FIFA’s celebration of the tournament’s 100th anniversary, resulting in six teams receiving automatic qualification spots.
Media outlets are questioning FIFA’s decision to grant the three Latin American countries automatic spots in the 2030 FIFA World Cup when they are hosting only one match each.
