The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has officially released a formal statement condemning the EU’s political resolution against Morocco. The Arab IPU is the latest international body to undertake this protest, joining the ranks of other groups like the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) and the Arab Parliament (AP) in growing international condemnation of the EU’s choice to slam Morocco over the recent migration crisis in Ceuta despite its efforts in curbing Europe-bound irregular immigration. condemnation.
In its statement, the Arab IPU said the EU was “ignoring the origins of diplomatic relations and parliamentary norms between countries, which should always be based on the principle of dialogue, understanding, common interests and mutual respect.” This follows a flow of criticism that Spain was outsourcing its political issues, rather than handle the crisis within a bilateral framework with Rabat.
The document also mentioned Morocco’s longtime importance to the security of Europe, especially its extensive history as a critical force “in combating terrorism, illegal immigration and human trafficking.”
The IPU also accused the EU’s decision for “encouraging unjustified interference in the affairs of independent sovereign states,” as well as “promoting a policy of antagonizing Arab countries” in its political decision-making. Many have criticized Spain’s neocolonialist attitudes towards the conflict in Western Sahara, arguing that Spanish involvement in the situation is completely unjustified.
The Arab IPU concluded with pledging its full political support to Morocco in the ongoing standoff with Spain, stressing its “support for all the measures it [Morocco] is taking to confront this unjustified decision and incorrect accusations” from Europe.
The 21-member political body released its statement from Beirut today, making it the latest international political body choosing to join in solidarity with Morocco after a series of Spain’s political blunders caused an ongoing diplomatic feud between the two countries.
