Rabat – Lawrence Randolph, the US Consul General in Morocco, lauded the current state of relations between the US and Morocco in a statement to the Moroccan press.
As the US and Morocco celebrate multiple shared successes and mutual achievements, Randolph noted the specific achievement of 15 years since the US and Morocco signed the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
According to David Greene, the Charge d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Rabat, bilateral trade between Morocco and the US reached nearly $5 billion (MAD 44.1 billion) in 2019. This is a 400% increase since the initial inception of the agreement in 2006.
The American diplomat called the relationship “”historic, deep, and secular,” going on to add that the US and Morocco are also celebrating the 200th anniversary of the American Legation in Tangier.
The diplomatic outpost served as the US’ first foreign embassy and Morocco’s Sultan Mulay Suleiman was the first international leader to recognize the US’ independence from Great Britain.
Randolph stated that Morocco’s role in the US’ pursuit for international recognition of its sovereignty is “a very important thing for us.”
Likewise, the US recognized Morocco’s territorial sovereignty over Western Sahara in December 2020.
Randolph is highly qualified to serve as a liaison between the US and Morocco and has served as the US Consul General in Morocco since January 4, 2021. He worked as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Algeria before his current diplomatic mission in Morocco.
Morocco and US relations continue to prosper across a wide range of sectors.
As of June 7, the US and Morocco are engaging in joint-military exercise African Lion along with 8 other countries. The exercises take place across Morocco and many high ranking officials such as US General Stephen Townsend have described the exercise as “an excellent example of the United States’ long-term commitment to Africa.”
