Denver – Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Zina Aker has reaffirmed her country’s support for Moroccan sovereignty and reiterated its “rejection of seperatist states” in the Western Sahara region.
Aker made the comments on Wednesday during a video call with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The call was set up for the two dignitaries to discuss bilateral relations “of cooperation and solidarity” between Lebanon and Morocco, according to a statement from the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Bourita praised cooperation between the two states on various initiatives. He underlined the “importance” King Mohammed VI “attaches to supporting the security and stability of Lebanon,” pledging future support for the country.
Morocco’s top diplomat also expressed interest in “modernizing” the current bilateral framework between the two countries, and both ministers agreed to form a consular committee that will work to facilitate easier visa access and travel for citizens of the two countries.
Aker echoed the same sentiments, in addition to thanking Morocco for the medical and food aid it provided to Lebanon during the course of the COVID pandemic.
Last April, Morocco completed the delivery of several batches of aid to Beirut, including 90 tons of food, to assist Lebanon in its efforts to support Lebanese citizens during the pandemic. Aker noted Morocco’s continued support for Lebanon’s stability since the signing of the Taif agreement ended the Lebanese civil war in 1989.
Aker gained international prominence last year for becoming the first female defense minister in Arab history, and she currently holds this post in addition to her role as Deputy Prime Minister.
