Rabat – Malawi officially inaugurated its consulate general in Morocco’s Laayoune today, July 29.

Malawian Minister of Foreign Affairs Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka chaired the inaugural ceremony along with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita.

With the new opening, the southern provinces of Laayoune and Dakhla are home to more than 20 general consulates representing several countries.

The consulate general of Malawi is the 12th representative after the opening of the consulates of Gabon, Comoros, the Central African Republic, Sao Tome and Principe, Burundi, Cote D’Ivoire, Eswatini, Zambia, the UAE, Jordan, and Bahrain.

Malawi is also planning to open an embassy in Rabat.

In recent years, the country has constantly renewed support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Malawi’s support came after the country decided to withdraw recognition of the Polisario’s self-proclaimed SADR in 2017.

Moroccan FM  Nasser Bourita said that the Malawi-Morocco ties have improved significantly after Malawi’s decision to withdraw recognition of SADR.

“Today, there is the high will of King Mohammed VI and President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera to develop relations in depth and activate bilateral cooperation mechanisms,” the official said earlier this week.

Bourita also emphasized that both countries hold similar views on a variety of issues, including security.

Malawi and Morocco also seek to boost ties in other bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including agriculture and academia.

“This development of relations with Malawi, is within the framework of the King’s high will to open up to English-speaking African countries, to establish channels of communication with them and to agree on development projects in all fields,” Bourita said.
