Rabat – Time Magazine has listed Morocco’s Red City, Marrakech, on it’s list of Top 100 Greatest Places of 2021. Although the list is in no particular order, the Moroccan city is listed with the likes of other marvelous world sites such as the volcanoes of Hawaii and Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats.
The world-renowned magazine states that Marrakech’s old medina is a “test of navigational skills, but it’s well worth visiting the winding alleyways and narrow market stalls.” Marrakech’s medina dates back to 1062 A.D during the age of the Almoravid dynasty.
Time Magazine notes two prominent hotels, El Fenn and the Oberoi Marrakech, as the establishments feature Riad-style accommodations and other amenities such as spas and bars.
Additionally, the magazine adds that Marrakech is a city of gastronomy.
Internationally-known Chef Jean-Georges opened two new restaurants in the Red City. One restaurant serves East Asian food while the other serves “some of the best pizza in the city—in the newly renovated La Mamounia.”
According to Time, Sir Winston Churchill frequented La Mamounia, making the site especially unique for historians and pizza-lovers alike.
Marrakech is one of the most welcoming cities in Morocco for foreigners. Each year, Marrakech sees upwards of two million visitors. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the city welcomed nearly three million visitors every year.

UNESCO named Marrakech’s Medina as a World Heritage Site in 1985, adding to Morocco’s other 8 sites of similar standing. Alongside the World Heritage Convention, UNESCO notes Marrakech’s most prominent sites such as the Koutoubia mosque and Jemaa El Fenaa as points of interest for visitors.
