Rabat- Moroccan police in the city of Casablanca seized 5 tonnes and 820 kilograms of cannabis resin on Monday, July 12.
The police conducted security operations along the route linking Casablanca to Bouznika, a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said today, July 13.
During the operation, police arrested six suspects for their alleged involvement in a criminal organization that was engaged in an international drug smuggling operation by sea.
The police were able to seize the drug following searches of two vehicles.
Police put the suspects in custody for further investigation to determine the circumstances of the case and arrest other possible accomplices.
The security operation was carried out in collaboration with the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) said.
The operation is also part of Morocco’s security approach against drug trafficking.
All security services in Morocco, including DGST, DGSN, Royal Gendarmerie, and Naval forces collaborate to eradicate drug trafficking across the country.
Morocco carried out several operations throughout the year, mainly focused on preventing drug trafficking.
One of the latest operations took place on June 4, when police in Nador, eastern Morocco, seized three tonnes of cannabis resin.
Police also arrested seven suspects for their alleged involvement in the criminal network, a ring involved in the international drug and psychotropic trafficking.
In 2020, DGSN said that police seized as many as 217 tonnes of cannabis, indicating an increase of 37 tonnes compared to 2019.
During the same year, security services also arrested 97,564 people for their involvement in drug trafficking cases..
A report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said that Moroccan police and other services seized approximately 300 tonnes of cannabis plants in 2019.
The ranking places Morocco in sixth place worldwide in terms of the number of psychoactive substances seized.
