Rabat – The UK Embassy in Morocco informed Morocco World News of the opening of the Chevening Scholarship for foreign scholars. In 2019, 11 Moroccans won the award, granting them a fully-funded year of graduate studies in the UK.
The full-ride scholarship will be open from August 3 to November 2, 2021.
According to a press release, “Over 50,000 professionals have had the opportunity to develop in the UK through Chevening,” since the scholarship’s inauguration in 1983.
Each year, the UK accepts approximately 1,500 foreign candidates as Chevening scholars as part of the UK’s “ongoing commitment to developing the leaders of tomorrow.”
An Erudera study revealed that there has been a 51% increase in Moroccan students studying in the UK in the past six years. The 2019-2020 school year saw 975 Moroccan students enrolled in a UK higher education institution. Most of the students studied in England while a cumulative 95 students studied in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The Chevening Scholarship is highly inclusive and its guidelines state that the admissions panel does not discriminate based on “gender, age (there is no upper age limit), sexual orientation, religion, marriage or parenthood status, caste, class, or other attributes.”
In a statement on the Chevening Scholarship, the UK’s Ambassador to Morocco, Simon Martin, said, “If you want to be the best at what you do and if you have the imagination to inspire others, then a Chevening Scholarship could be the perfect opportunity for you.”
The program stipulates that the Chevening Scholar will study full-time at a participating UK-based university and the course must lead to a master’s degree qualification. Additionally, the course must begin in the fall semester (September/October), according to the UK university schedule system.
Other prominent figures such as the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) Head of Scholarships, Naomi Rayner, stated that “Chevening seeks to build an international community of people who are committed to working together to drive positive change.”
Both Rayner and Martin reiterated that the point of the scholarship is to bring diverse schools of thought to the UK for multilateral cultural enrichment and expand the Chevening Scholarship alumni network, which is made up of over 50,000 scholars.
