Denver- Local police in the town of Fnideq announced the apprehension of a man suspected of participating in an international drug trafficking operation.
A report presented to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) stated the man was found with over 4,600 Rivotril pills in his possession. Rivotril is a prescription benzodiazepine pill typically administered to treat anxiety and epilepsy, however it is also commonly abused as a recreational narcotic.
Police also reported finding nearly 3.5 kilograms of hashish products after searching the man’s residence, as well as a large sum of cash suspected of being obtained through drug sales. Police reported they are keeping the man under detention, pending the completion of their official investigation.
Local police have enlisted the help of the Judicial police of Tetouan, and the local Public Prosecutor to determine whether the man will potentially face additional charges.
Fnideq is a small city located less than twenty miles north of the city of Tetouan. The region is a common area for drug traffickers seeking to move drugs north into Spain, due to its geographical proximity. Earlier this year, another individual was arrested in Fnideq, after police found the man in possession of nearly 10,000 psychotropic pills.
The arrest is a result of Morocco’s nationwide operation against drug traffickers in the country. Both Moroccan and Spanish security officials continue to combat extensive international drug trafficking rings that aim to use Morocco as a transit point for narcotics destined for European countries. The narrow strait of water separating the two countries has made it a prime location for groups looking to move drugs into Europe.
Although Moroccan security officials continue to seize large tons of narcotics, officials are faced with increasingly advanced drug trafficking networks utilizing state-of-the-art tactics to evade police and move their products across the border.
