Rabat – The World University Rankings 2022 has declared Fez’s Sidi Mohamed Abdellah University as Morocco’s best institute for higher education. The ranking evaluated six Moroccan universities, with only the top university from Fez ranking in the top 1000 universities worldwide.
Higher education in Morocco has a long road ahead as five out of six universities were ranked outside the top 1000. Kenitra’s Ibn Tofail University was ranked the second best university in Morocco. The remaining four universities were all ranked outside the top 1200 universities. The bottom four universities were University Hassan I, University Hassan II, Cadi Ayyad University of Marrakech, and Rabat’s Mohammed V University.
The ranking highlighted the very limited enrollment of foreign students in Morocco’s universities. All institutes took in 3% or less of their students from abroad. Many of the world’s top universities draw at least one third of their students from abroad. Foreign students are increasingly seen as a great source of revenue for universities as they often pay higher tuition fees compared to domestic students.

The 2022 World University Rankings is organized and published by the for-profit Times Higher Education company, which sells data and benchmarking tools to universities. Its ranking includes 2,150 institutions, making Morocco’s universities rank in the middle of the list.
Student admission data did however show the growing rate of female students within Moroccan higher education, with all universities showing a nearly 50-50 ratio between male and female students.
