Rabat – A coup d’Etat has been confirmed in Guinea after heavy gunfire between presidential guards and a division of the country’s special forces.
A photo went viral online showing masked members of Guinea’s special forces surrounding a dejected and dispirited President Conde on a sofa.
Sources from Guinea confirm the success of the coup d’etat in the country.
The arrest of the president followed a heavy gunfire between the presidential guard and the Special Forces Group led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.
Reports indicate that the heavy gunfire in downtown Conakry caused injuries among at least two people.
Guinea’s National Defense Ministry confirmed the gunfire from members of the Special Forces Group, but added that the coup attempt was unsuccessful.
The ministry accused “elements of the Special Forces” forces of causing fear and chaos in Conakry while heading to the presidential palace.

Meanwhile, the Special Forces Group released a video, confirming the success of the coup and calling on “all Guineans and our brothers in arms” to show unity and restraint..
In the video, Colonel Doumbouya, the head of the putschists, said: “Fellow Guineans, the dire political-situation of our country, the instrumentalization of the judiciary, the non-respect of democratic principles, the extreme politicization of public administration, as well as poverty and corruption… have compelled the army, through the Committee of National Rally and Development (CNRD), to take its responsibility.”
The coup d’etat comes as Morocco’s national football team is in Conakry to face Guinea’s Syli National as part of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
The Atlas Lions game is scheduled for Monday, September 6.
Due to the latest developments in Conakry, it remains to be seen whether the match will take place as initially scheduled.
A source from Guinea said that the tension is not causing any threats against the Moroccan national team. The hotel where the Atlas Lions are staying is near the incident scene, but the Special Forces team that captured President Conde was only interested in the presidential palace, the source stressed.
