Rabat – The General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) announced that the ongoing heatwave Morocco is experiencing will continue until Friday.

DMN issued an orange alert, saying that a heatwave ranging between 36 and 45 degrees Celsius is sweeping across the country.

Temperatures ranging between 36 and 41 degrees are expected on Monday and Tuesday in several provinces, including Beni Mellal, Larache, Boulemane, Chichaoua, El Hajeb, Errachidia, Oujda, Taza, Guercif, Fez, Fqih Bensalah, and Sefrou.

The same temperatures will also affect Ifrane, Inezgane Ait Melloul, Khemisset, Khouribga, Meknes, Moulay Yacoub, Ouazzane, Rhamna, Sidi Ifni, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Taounate, and Youssoufia.

Within the same period, temperatures will range between 42 and 44 degrees in Settat, Kelaa des Sraghna, and Marrakech.

High temperatures ranging between 42 and 45 degrees will start today, September 6, and will last until Friday, September 10, in several provinces, including Aousserd, Assa-Zag, Smara, Oued-Eddahab, Tata, Zagora, Tantan, and Taroudant.

The DMN initially announced that the sweltering heatwave would last until Wednesday, September 8.

It remains to be seen whether 2021 will surpass 2020 as Morocco’s hottest year.

In its weather report earlier this year, DMN said that 2020 was the hottest year ever recorded in Morocco. The year 2020 was hotter than 2017 and 2010, as measured by an average temperature anomaly of 1.4 compared to the climatological average over the 1981-2010 period.
