Rabat – Nabila Rmili will become the first female mayor of Casablanca, succeeding Abdelaziz El Omari at the head of the City Council of Morocco’s economic capital.

Rmili, whose candidacy was highly favored, was selected as part of a coalition of the three highest-ranking parties in the September 8 elections in Casablanca.

The election of Nabila Rmili will be formalized during a session scheduled between September 16 and 25, in accordance with the provisions of the organic law No. 113.14 on municipalities.

Rmili, who is also the regional director of health for the Casablanca-Settat region, is not at her first participation in the management of the affairs of the municipality of Casablanca.

Under El Omari’s mandate, she served as vice-president of the city council, in addition to her position as elected councillor for the district of Sbata.

Dr. Nabila Rmili is also the president of the organization of health professionals of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), the winner of Morocco’s 2021 general elections.

Rmili is joining a number of Moroccan women claiming high offices following this year’s election.

Like Casablanca, Rabat has also chosen a woman as mayor.

The party coalition chose Asmaa Rhlalou, a journalist and the former deputy of the RNI in the House of Representatives, for the mayoral position in the administrative capital.

The three parties have also agreed on the names of future mayors of other major cities in the region.

According to local news outlets, the presidency of the municipalities of Temara, Kenitra, and Khémisset would also be entrusted to elected representatives of the RNI.

The communes of Sale and Sidi Kacem will be led by elected officials of the Istiqlal party, while Rachid El Abdi of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) is expected to be the future president of the council of the region of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra.

PAM’s Fatima-Zahra Mansouri, who was the mayor of Marrakech between 2009-2015, also seems to be in a good position to take over the reins of Morocco’s tourism hub.

PAM’s recent victory in various communal districts comprising the city council of Marrakech could ensure a comfortable majority for the self-described progressive party.
