Rabat – Police in the city of Agadir, in the Souss-Massa region in Morocco, arrested on Monday a man for using a fake gun to threaten pharmacists for psychotropic pills.

The 19-year-old man carried a gun to threaten people working in the pharmacy that refused to hand him psychotropic pills without a prescription, the police said in a statement.

A search operation enabled police to seize a sonic gun at the suspect’s house, noted the statement. Police also seized cannabis and an unregistered motorcycle after searching the house.

The suspect has been taken into police custody, pending further investigations to shed light on his curious case.

Morocco has been intensifying its efforts to combat both the consumption and trafficking of psychotropic tablets and other related drugs.

In 2020, the Moroccan police  arrested 97,564 people for their alleged involvement in drug smuggling cases. The number represented a decline of 23% compared  to 2019.

Again in 2020, Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) seized 476,923 psychotropic tablets.

During the same year, security operations allowed police to also  seize 132.167 kilograms of cocaine, 8.5 kilograms of heroin, and over 217 tonnes of cannabis and its derivatives.
