Scottish media have been quick to highlight the scale of the challenge awaiting their side ahead of Friday’s World Cup Group C match with Morocco in Boston, with Lyndon Dykes among those setting the tone on the difficulty of the test.
In a press conference, Scottish international player Lyndon Dykes has described Morocco as a side full of “world-class players”. He insists Scotland will need to be at their absolute best. underlining that the opposition are dangerous in every phase.
“They’re a good team,” he said. “They have world class players and they are dangerous. We have to be at our best as a team to make sure we get something out of the game.”
Scotland come to the game after a 1-0 win over Haiti. Morocco, meanwhile, opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Brazil. That result immediately caught attention in Scotland. It changed the tone around this fixture.
Morocco’s only goal came through Ismael Saibari. He finished after a defence-splitting pass from Brahim Díaz. The finish was calm and lifted over Alisson Becker. Brazil responded later through Vinícius Júnior before half-time. The match eventually ended 1-1.
Scottish media have pointed heavily to that performance, focusing on Morocco’s technical quality, while also pointing to their organisation and structure.
During BBC coverage, former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet also hailed Morocco’s first-half display. “Morocco started the game very well,” he said. “Technically, they look better than Brazil and their gameplan is working better.”
Friday’s match is widely viewed as Scotland’s first true test of the tournament, with Group C remaining balanced after the opening round of matches.
The margins are slim, and Scotland may need to take something from either Morocco or Brazil to keep qualification firmly within their control. Above all, every clash is decisive in the battle for a place in the knockout stages.
Dykes also spoke about competition and flexibility within the squad. He accepted that selection depends on the opponent and game plan. “Different games have different opposition and different outcomes to the way we need to play,” he said. “I’m hoping I do play but whatever that is, it is what it is.”
“We all bring different qualities,” he said. “My strength’s getting up the pitch and being that outlet.”
