Meknes – Morocco’s Futsal Atlas Lions beat Venezuela 3-2 to qualify for the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2021 Futsal World Cup in Lithuania.
Coach Hicham Dguig’s men performed a spectacular game against their South American opponents, taking the national team to the next round of Lithuania Futsal World Cup 2021.
Soufiane Mesrar scored all three goals for Morocco.
Morocco’s futsal national team made their first-time-ever accomplishment to qualify for this round.
Today’s result adds to the historic achievements of Morocco’s futsal team in Lithuania. The squad had already made history by qualifying for the round of 16, the first time Morocco has ever reached that stage of the Futsal World Cup.
In their first group match, Morocco scored 6 goals against the Solomon Islands; they drew 1-1 with Thailand in their second game, and 3-3 with Portugal in the third match.
A surprising performance
The national team is participating for the third time in the international competition. Morocco lost all six of its Futsal World Cup games in 2012 and 2016.
But after impressing at this year’s Arab Cup, scoring 27 goals and conceding only two goals during the entire tournament, the team signaled it has massively improved in recent years and effectively announced itself as a serious contender for the 2021 World Cup.
With two games separating the Atlas Lions from a historic World Cup final, it remains to be seen whether Hicham Dguig and his men will meet all the great expectations of their growing cohort of fans.
