Rabat – Morocco has received a new batch of AstraZeneca vaccines as part of the COVAX program.
The new batch includes over 650,400 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to strengthen Morocco’s vaccination campaign.
A global initiative, COVAX seeks to ensure that developing countries secure enough doses of vaccines to curb the spread of COVID-19.
The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization introduced the initiative in collaboration with the World Health Organization and UNICEF, among other stakeholders.
According to Moroccan television channel 2M, Morocco is also expecting 680,000 doses of Pfizer in the coming days.
The North African Country will also receive one million doses of Sinopharm.
The new shipments will help Morocco strengthen its vaccination campaign amid a remarkable surge in COVID-19 cases.
To date, Morocco has fully vaccinated 14,780,868 people, while the number of first dose-vaccinated people is 14,780,868.
The Ministry of Health has been urging citizens and residents to engage in the vaccination campaign to curb the spread of COVID-19 and its emerging variants.
As part of its vaccination pledge, the North African country plans to vaccinate as many as 33 million people, or 80% of the population, to reach herd immunity.
Morocco launched the vaccination campaign on January 28, with King Mohammed VI kicking off the campaign by receiving the country’s first dose.
