Denver- France is ready to establish and deepen its relationship with Rabat following the implementation of Morocco’s new government.
In a press statement from the French Foreign Ministry headquarters at the Quai d’Orsay on Friday, October 8, officials from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed their congratulations to Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch and the newly appointed cabinet.
The French officials also relayed their “commitment to continue to deepen the exceptional partnership with Morocco in all fields.”
The congratulatory message occurs at a time when France and Morocco are experiencing a period of strained Franco-Moroccan relations. Moroccan citizens were outraged by France’s decision to reduce the number of visas issued to Moroccans by 50%.
The decision offended Moroccans, especially because France and Morocco share a long and extensive history.
France’s decision provoked many Moroccans to rally on social media for a boycott of French products in Morocco in response to the perceived discrimination.
The French government expressed its best wishes for the success of Morocco’s new government, despite the less-than-amicable situation.
Morocco serves as France’s most important ally in the Maghreb region. Both countries frequently cooperate on security operations, and French officials often rely on Morocco as a reliable source of information in North Africa.
The direction of the French-Moroccan relations under Aziz Akhannouch’s new government is unknown. However, the upcoming presidential elections in Paris next year, and the likelihood of a new French president replacing Macron could herald a new era of relations that will be notable for its potential shift of balance between Africa and Europe.
