Rabat – Security services in Morocco’s Tangier Med Port aborted an international drug trafficking operation, a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said.

Police seized over 6,300 narcotic medical pills the traffickers were attempting to traffic to Morocco from Spain.

Security officers also arrested a 53-year old Moroccan man involved in the case immediately upon his arrival on a ship coming from the Algeciras port in Spain.

Research led to the discovery of the drug shipment that was wrapped in duct tape in the body of the driver and tucked tightly under his clothes.

Police put the suspect under custody for further investigations to throw further light on the case and identify the apprehended suspect’s local and international accomplices.

Today’s operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to further its fight against local and transborder drug trafficking.

Morocco’s security services carry out raids on drug trafficking operations regularly. All security services, including customs, gendarmeries, and police usually team up when  cracking down on local and transcontinental drug trafficking operations.

One such raid took place on October 10, when a Moroccan Royal Navy coast guard on patrol off the Strait of Gibraltar aborted a drug trafficking operation.

The operation led to the arrest of five traffickers and the seizure of about three tons of cannabis.

DGSN services seized 217 tonnes and 323 kilograms of cannabis in 2020, an increase of 37 tonnes compared to 2019.

In 2020, police also arrested 97, 564 people for their involvement in drug trafficking cases.
