Rabat – Moroccan judicial police in Kenitra, near Rabat thwarted an international drug trafficking attempt on Saturday.

A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said today that police seized 1 tonne and 275 kilograms of cannabis during the security operation.

Police also arrested two individuals, including a minor, for their alleged involvement with an international drug trafficking network.

Security services carried out the arrest at the toll station on the highway near Kenitra.

DGSN said police carried out the arrest directly after the arrival of the suspect’s car  at the toll station.

The drugs were concealed in the form of 39 packages in the car.

Police put the main suspect in custody, while the secondary suspect was placed under judicial supervision as part of the ongoing investigation to identify other accomplices.

The operation, which is part of Morocco’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and smugglers, took place in collaboration with Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

DGSN services seized 217 tonnes and 323 kilograms of cannabis in 2020, an increase of 37 tonnes compared to 2019.

In 2020, police also arrested 97, 564 people for their involvement in drug trafficking cases.

Cannabis is among the most popular drugs used in Morocco.

A report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) showed that the Moroccan security services have seized approximately 300 tonnes of cannabis plants in 2019.

The ranking puts Morocco in sixth place worldwide in terms of the number of psychoactive substances seized.
