Rabat – Morocco’s incoming government’s plan includes ambitions to officialise the Amazigh language in Morocco.
Akhannouch’s government is vowing to “catch up” on the delay of officialising the Amazigh language in the country as part of the new administration’s ten main promises presented to the parliament this week..
In its program, the government is committed to implementing the official character of the Amazigh language. Firstly, the government will create a special fund financed by the state budget. The fund’s goal aims to reach MAD 1 billion by 2025.
Second, the government also plans to create both national and regional advisory committees to ensure the proper governance of the fund.
The latter will be created in 2022, and will finance the implementation, promotion and usage of the Amazigh language in the same regard as Arabic and French.
According to the governmental plan, the fund has two main objectives. First being the integration of Amazigh in the fields of education, legislation, information and communication, as well as cultural and artistic creation, and its use in public administrations and public spaces.
In addition, the fund will be used to reinforce the cultural and linguistic equity that will accompany the institutionalization of Amazigh.
Back in 2011, a legal project was established through Article 5 of the newly reformed Moroccan constitution, giving hope to many Amazigh speakers and enthusiasts on the promising future of the native language.
Since then, little progress had been made, considering it took the government a full 8 years to pass an organic law that institutionalized amazigh.
