Denver – The Dominican Republic FM Roberto Alvarez affirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan in Western Sahara after a bilateral meeting held on Monday with  Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita.

During their meeting, the two officials discussed ways to deepen bilateral ties and cooperate on various topics of mutual interest. After the meeting, both Alvarez and Bourita released a joint statement during which the Dominican representative expressed his country’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty.

“The Dominican Republic reaffirmed its respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its national sovereignty and supports Morocco’s efforts in the search for a political solution aimed at putting an end to this regional dispute,” says the statement.

The two diplomats noted that the UN is also an important coordinator of global peace efforts, as well as the preservation of human rights. In this context, Bourita commended the role of the Dominican Republic as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council during the 2019-2020 period.

Morocco also congratulated the Dominican Republic for its appointment as General Secretariat Pro Tempore for the Ibero-American Summit, and its efforts within the Integration System of Central America (SICA). Bourita expressed Morocco’s interest in continuing to collaborate with SICA as an observer nation, and to strengthen dialogue within the group’s political forum.

Meanwhile, Alvarez commended Morocco’s role in trying to find a peaceful solution to the Western Sahara conflict. In the joint declaration released, Alvarez noted that Morocco’s autonomy plan represents “the realistic, credible and serious solution to achieve a result negotiated between the parties.”

The virtual meeting between the two countries is the first diplomatic meeting since June 2019, when Bourita traveled to Santo Domingo to sign two bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening trade, investment, and visa cooperation between the two nations.
