Rabat – The “Morocco-UK Power Project” is drawing widespread attention as the ambitious project could connect the UK to Morocco’s renewable energy. Morocco’s growing renewable energy riches are increasingly bringing ever-more ambitious projects to the north African country.
British renewables developer Xlinks, headed by former Tesco CEO Simon Morrish, presented its ambitious plan to the world last month. The group’s “Morocco-UK Power Project” plans to connect Morocco and the UK with the longest underwater power cable in the world.
The mammoth effort required to lay such a cable would ultimately pay off for both Morocco and the UK, Xlinks emphasizes, pointing out that the project would bring Morocco’s vast renewable energy opportunities to the British energy market.

The cable would see Moroccan renewable energy, generated in its efficient wind and solar farms, distributed to the UK via four 3,800 km long cables. The direct power connection would allow energy to flow directly to the UK, with 20 GWh battery storage to ensure a steady supply of clean energy to the British isles.
The project has received much attention since its unveiling last month. The BBC published an extensive analysis of the project titled “how to plug the UK into desert sunshine.” The search for sources of renewable energy in the UK, an important factor in meeting its international climate commitments, make sun-rich Morocco a likely candidate, despite the complexity of the project.
