Rabat – Moroccan athlete Jawad Abdelmoula won the gold medal at the 2021 World Triathlon Cup On Saturday, October 30, in Tongyeong, South Korea.

With 48 men diving off the south coast of Korea, many were surprised as the triathlon newcomer Abdelmoula clocked 51 minutes and 43 seconds to clinch his first World Cup gold in the men’s race.

Jawad Abdelmoula edged out Italy’s Alessio Crociani who finished the race in 51 minutes and 53 seconds.

The 27-year-old athlete is a former runner with five World Triathlons experience.

“Jawad Abdelmoula almost immediately took the lead among the leaders and led the race. As a former rider who has only participated in five world triathlon races, he has worked hard every time to increase the distance to his rivals,” tweeted World Triathlon.

Following his win, Abdelmoula mentioned tactical lessons he learned in previous races. “I was really happy today because last week I was on the third pack on the bike,” he told World Triathlon news media.

“Today I was very happy to win today – as I was in the first pack and ran very well,” he added.

Abdelmoula currently works as a professional firefighter in Rennes and has been assigned to the Blosne rescue center for nearly six years.

The triathlete aims to rise to international prominence as he prepares to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

He is currently the 230th triathlete in the world ranking.
