Rabat – While Moroccan authorities had continuously assured citizens that the COVID-19 vaccine was not mandatory, the sudden decision to adopt the vaccine passport for travel and access to public spaces sparked outrage among political parties.
In reaction to this decision, Nabila Mounib, politician and General Secretary of the Unified Socialist Party (PSU), who refuses to get vaccinated, held a meeting to “analyze the government’s decision of imposing the vaccination pass as a necessary document for access to public and private administrations, hotels, travels, restaurants, cafes.”
According to the PSU, the government’s decision “is not in line with the expectations of the Moroccan people,” the party considered it as a “violation of rights and freedoms.”
While the vaccination is not compulsory, PSU criticized the new measure which they find “unacceptable” as it restricts citizens’ freedom of movement and deprives them from freely entering public and private spaces.
During the meeting, PSU expressed their “refusal that the government continues to violate the Constitution and deceive the institutions, including the legislative institution, by taking administrative measures that go against the provisions of the fundamental law.”
Mounib’s Party urged the Ministry of Interior and the Health Ministry to “respect the principles of the Constitution, including the principle of the right of access to information.”
The political party requests that information access cover all aspects of the epidemic in the country, including preventative measures and vaccine protection.
The PSU also warned of the “repercussions of the curfew and restrictions on freedom of movement on economic activity and arbitrary dismissals of employees and workers,” calling on the government to reconsider the “unfair” decision.
“[PSU] reserves the right to refer the matter to the Constitutional Court to inquire about the constitutionality and legality of this decision and request its withdrawal,” concluded the left Party.
Following Morocco’s decision to implement the ‘vaccine pass’ on October 18, the Moroccan government explained that the pass is intended to further contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
Authorities called on non-vaccinated citizens to receive their vaccination regimen as soon as possible, while those vaccinated for more than six months are eligible to take the “booster shot” to strengthen their immunity.
