Rabat -The State of Qatar on Wednesday reiterated its support for Morocco’s UN-backed proposal for a lasting and compromise-based political solution to the Western Sahara conflict.
Speaking before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Alya Ahmed Bin Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN, said that her country “supports the efforts of the UN Secretary General to achieve a lasting political solution and compromise within the framework of the political process conducted under the auspices of the United Nations.”
“In accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council, including resolution 2548 (2021),” she added, any lasting solution to the decades-long Sahara dispute should “ensure the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco” over its territory.
The Qatari ambassador reaffirmed that the Autonomy Plan presented by Morocco is “a constructive initiative and the basis for any realistic solution to this issue.”
She also expressed her hope that the resolution to be adopted by the UN’s Fourth Committee will support the political process and lead to a final solution that “serves the interests of the parties and strengthens peace, stability and cooperation in the region.”
Qatar has a long history of close ties with Morocco, and the Gulf country has consistently expressed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in recent years.
In January of this year, Qatar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi attended a Western Sahara-themed conference and expressed his country’s strong support for Morocco’s territorial integrity.
Qatar is part of a long and rapidly growing list of countries who support the Moroccan autonomy plan as the best and most viable way out of the decades-long political quagmire in the Western Sahara debate.
