Rabat – Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch on Monday presented the main goals of his new government during a plenary session held by both houses of the Moroccan parliament.
Newly formed governments in Morocco are constitutionally required to create a program and present it to parliament following the royal opening of the legislative body.
The program must detail the government’s action plan in the various sectors of national activity and, in particular, in the fields of economic, social, environmental, cultural, and foreign policy.
Monday’s plenary session was chaired by the Speakers of the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors, respectively Rachid Talbi Alami and Naam Miyara.
Akhannouch focused on sustaining and furthering Morocco’s effective response to the COVID crisis , consolidating the country’s democratic reforms, and committing to the efficient implementation of the New Development Model.
Regarding the guiding principles of the governmental program, the new Head of Government emphasized the ten commitments of his government during the 2021-2026 period, such as his party’s promise to reevaluate salaries and pensions, as well as the creation of 1 million jobs.
Among the priorities to address, Akhannouch mentioned the strengthening of state-provided social services, a mass employment strategy, good governance in public management, as well as the establishment of a strong cooperative relationship between the executive and legislative bodies.
The governmental program provides realistic and ambitious responses to get out of the COVID crisis and project into the future with determination and consistency, according to Akhannouch.
But the new government’s closest challenge remains the new finance bill for the upcoming year.
In an atmosphere of soaring optimism, and in view of upcoming deadlines, the new ministers are settling in and forming their cabinets while the final touches are being made to the finance bill drawn up by the previous cabinet.
The bill will be presented next week and will be the first concrete test of the new government’s ability or readiness to develiver on the promises detailed in its action plan.
