Rabat – Morocco’s Consulate General in Las Palmas, a city in the Canary Islands, was vandalized with red paint on the weekend.

The golden plaque at the entrance of the Moroccan diplomatic institution was covered in red, with the word “Vox” written on it.

According to the Spanish media outlet Confidential Digital, the incident coincided with the Spanish far-right party Vox’s “congress on illegal immigration and Islamism in Europe.”

Vox leader Santiago Abascal is known for his open and unapologetic hatred of Muslims, particularly Moroccans.

According to reports, Vox’s on migration and islamism, during which Abascal recited his usual Islamophobic and anti-Moroccan slogans, paved the way for a large anti-Islam protest in the streets of Las Palmas.

During the congress, Vox supporters chanted persistently “Canary Islands without fascism,” “the Canary Islands will be the tomb of fascism.”

Hours after the protest, most of the painting had disappeared at the Moroccan consulate. The word “Vox” was no longer visible, and there was hardly any sign left.

Supporters of the far-right Vox party are believed to be behind the act of vandalism at the consulate.

This is not the first time that the Spanish far-right party has stirred up xenophobia against Moroccans.

On Monday, Vox’s leader expressed its intention to tighten the conditions for obtaining Spanish citizenship. The move is mainly targeted at  Spanish-Moroccans and Moroccan citizens in Spain, with Vox announcing a bill that will require Moroccans to renounce their Moroccan citizenship once they obtain Spanish nationality.

In July, Vox also attacked Imams in Ceuta, accusing them of being “pro-Moroccan” envoys whose main task is to “Moroccanize” the Spanish enclave.
