Rabat – Morocco’s President of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) Amina Bouayach, stressed on Thursday in Dubai that any approach to achieving equality between women and men requires the construction of a societal culture that supports and encourages women’s participation.
Speaking at a conference at the Morocco Pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai themed “Women’s rights in Morocco: historical vision and future prospects,” Bouayach emphasized the importance of monitoring women’s access to their rights and intensifying efforts to change social and cultural stereotypes to encourage women’s participation.
Several Moroccan and foreign personalities attended the meeting, including the Consul General of Morocco in Dubai Khaled Bencheikh.
During the meeting, Bouayach said that the process aimed at reaching equality between men and women, will continue, “in order to change mentalities based on beliefs and ideas evolving around law regarding the definition of the human being and the protection of dignity.”
She then recalled the development made to empower Moroccan women in the last decade, highlighting their achievements in political and social levels.
“Morocco is working, as part of an approach combining the right to development and human rights, to build public policies of non-discrimination that are not limited to the reform of laws, but also by removing the root causes of discrimination in its social, cultural and environmental dimensions,” she added.

She underlined that Moroccan women have contributed significantly to the development of the women’s rights movement that has fought to promote the principle of equality.
She added that the women’s movement in Morocco has created a societal dialogue around equality. She noted, in this regard, that before the last elections, amendments had been adopted to increase the representation of women to show their abilities in politics and public affairs.
For her part, President of the National Institute of Solidarity with Women in Distress “Insaf” Meriem Othmani, highlighted the achievements of Moroccan women, especially in terms of family and social rights, recalling various challenges that Moroccan women went through to achieve parity.
The event was an opportunity to discuss ways to encourage the effective and full implementation of equality, strengthen women’s political representation, and adopt approaches to support transversal integration of the gender approach into public policies.
