Rabat – Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca has explained why he preferred Phil Foden over Moroccan midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi during his team’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa.
The Italian manager faced questions about his tactical decisions after Manchester City struggled to control the midfield and fell behind early in the match.
Maresca decided to introduce Foden at the beginning of the second half, replacing Rayan Cherki in an attempt to strengthen City’s attack and change the course of the game.
However, his decision raised questions about Bouaddi’s absence, particularly as Manchester City struggled in midfield against Aston Villa.
Maresca explains his tactical decision
Speaking after the match, Maresca explained that the situation required a player with more attacking qualities rather than a traditional midfield option.
“I think the situation of the game today required a different solution. We needed a midfielder with more attacking and technical qualities, which is why we decided to take Rayan off and bring Phil Foden on,” Maresca said, according to Al Mountakhab.
The decision came as City struggled to maintain control in midfield, despite the presence of Enzo Fernandez and Elliot Anderson.
Although Bouaddi could have offered another option in the middle of the pitch, Maresca believed Foden’s attacking abilities were better suited to the team’s immediate needs.
Bouaddi remains part of Maresca’s plans
Despite leaving the Moroccan youngster on the bench, Maresca insisted that Bouaddi remains an important part of his squad.
The Italian coach expressed confidence in the 19-year-old’s abilities and suggested that the midfielder would receive more opportunities as the season progresses.
“There is absolutely no doubt that Ayoub will help us a lot. Enzo and Elliot played well today, and we have a lot of games ahead of us, which means Ayoub will get plenty of minutes and play in many matches,” he added.
His comments suggest that Bouaddi’s limited involvement against Aston Villa was a tactical decision rather than a reflection of his position within the squad.
With Manchester City competing in several competitions, squad rotation could offer the Moroccan international more opportunities to demonstrate his qualities.
Brighton clash could offer Bouaddi another opportunity
Bouaddi could have another chance to feature when Manchester City face Brighton in the fourth round of the English League Cup.
The upcoming fixture may provide Maresca with an opportunity to rotate his midfield and give younger players more playing time.
For Bouaddi, the match could represent another opportunity to strengthen his position in City’s squad and demonstrate that he can compete for a regular starting role.
The Moroccan midfielder will be hoping to turn Maresca’s words into more minutes on the pitch as Manchester City navigate a demanding schedule.
With the coach publicly expressing confidence in his potential, Bouaddi’s next challenge will be to make the most of the opportunities that come his way.
