Fez – Morocco was elected president of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP) on November 27 during the ongoing 143rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) in Madrid.

This is the first time Morocco, represented by Najib El Khadi, the secretary-general of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the Moroccan parliament, will preside over the ASGP.

El Khadi said in a statement following the appointment that Morocco’s election to the presidency of the ASGPshows the country’s unique position in the worldwide parliamentary community.

The appointment is a recognition of Morocco’s leading legislative experience and achievements in recent decades, El Khaldi explained. Morocco’s improved experience in parliamentary management is the culmination of major political reforms undertaken under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, he added.

The Moroccan MP went on to say that this election is the validation of the Moroccan Parliament’s long-term efforts and active engagement in regional and international forums.

The Moroccan parliament has been active in bilateral cooperation in recent months.

Morocco’s ambassador to Italy, Youssef Balla, met in June with the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Roberto Fico, to renew their commitment to a parliamentary cooperation agreement the Italian and Moroccan parliaments had signed two years prior.

In their meeting, the two parties stressed the importance of “revitalizing the legal framework of parliamentary relations in order for it to properly fulfill its duty” as a pillar of the strategic partnership they signed in Rabat on November 1, 2019.

Morocco and the European Union formally launched in July a new program called “Support for the Development of Parliament’s Role in the Consolidation of Democracy in Morocco.”

In September, Morocco’s House of Representatives and China’s National People’s Congress signed a cooperation agreement based on the respect of territorial integrity as a crucial component for international peace and security.

The ASGP’s mission is to assess its various members’ procedures, practices, and working techniques, and to recommend ways of maintaining cooperation between their agencies.

The ASGP met for the first time in Oslo on August 16, 1939, and the worldwide organization now counts more than 130 parliaments from across the world.
