Rabat- The Moroccan national carrier, Royal Air Maroc (RAM), announced on 30 November that it is preparing special flights from Morocco to Canada, Spain and Italy for December 04, 2021.
RAM previously announced it is preparing special flights from Morocco to France between November 30 and December 6.
The news comes after Morocco’s decision to suspend all flights as part of its preventive measures against the spreading of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus.
Morocco’s government cited alarming reports surrounding Ovicron in Europe and southern Africa when announcing its two-week flight suspension.
The two-week ban seeks to preserve the progress Morocco has made in curbing the COVID-19 crisis, the government said in a communique.
Several countries took similar decisions, banning travel from countries with new COVID-19 variants.
And while there is still no consensus over the effectiveness of the existing COVID-19 vaccines in the face of this contagious and “dangerous” variant, many health experts have said that Omicron is highly likely to weaken vaccine efficiency.
Tayeb Hamdi, a health professional and researcher in health policies and systems, said this week that Morocco has taken the necessary measures to reduce the risk of importing cases of the new variant of Omicron.
Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) labeled the new virus variant, first identified in South Africa, as one of concern.
The new strain is reported to carry 32 mutations, which possibly makes it more transmissible and dangerous.
