Algerian Hacker Attacks Website of Morocco’s Confederation of Enterprises

Rabat – The official website of the Moroccan General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) was the target of an “Algerian” cyberattack on Monday.

People who attempted to visit the website were surprised to find an unbecoming image on the website’s front page. The website displayed Algeria’s flag, with a message saying: “No peace between systems.”

The cyber attackers also left the perpetrator’s signature: 1337_H4x0rs_DZ. The website no longer shows the flag but says that it is now undergoing maintenance.

The cyberattack comes as tension between Morocco and Algeria is growing. Algeria severed relations with Morocco in August, and the Algerian regime has since taken many steps to accuse Morocco of a broad range of yet-to-be-proven and evidently made-up anti-Algeria plots.

The most recent such move is Algeria’s accusing Morocco of attacking and killing three Algerian truckers in Mauritania.

Cyberattacks have become commonplace in recent years, and many countries, including Morocco, have been targeted by both lone wolves and countries with diverging political or economic interests.

A recent report from Accenture Cyber Threat Intelligence (ACTI) and  US-based company Prevailing Adversarial Counterintelligence (PAC) found that Iran-based Lyceum hacking group targeted telecommunication operators in Morocco between July and October 2021.

The Iranian group also targeted other operators in different countries, including Israel, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia, according to the report.

A similar annual report from Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky also showed that Morocco and Algeria are both in the top five of countries with the highest numbers of digital attacks through mobile malware.
