Rabat – The Association of the Algerian Muslim Scholars has expressed its concerns regarding the recent tension between Algeria and Morocco.

The association issued a press release this week to warn against any  move that could  undermine the stability and security of the whole region amid threats of war originating from Algeria’s regime directed at Morocco.

The  press release recalled that Algeria and Morocco’s people both spilled blood as they resisted “brutal occupiers”.

The association called for caution against “enemy” plots, which seek to undermine the unity of the two peoples.

The press release called on scholars and intellectuals in the two countries to“bear the responsibility” to confront “evil” and to work towards calm and stability of the region.

“Leaders and politicians [have] to take into account the interest of the two brotherly people, in particular, and the region in general,” the statement added.

The statement echoes calls from the President of the Islamic Cultural Rally in  Mauritania Muhammaed Al-Hafid Al Nahwi. In a statement earlier this month, the scholar denounced the escalation of tensions between the two countries, urging Algiers and Rabat to show restraint and prioritize regional stability.

“We call on all the leaders of the region to give priority to the language of higher interests and to refuse to be drawn into propaganda fueled by war trumpets and their advocates,” he said.

Al Nahwi and the Algerian associations were not the first to denounce escalation of tension between the two countries.

Several organizations offered mediation after Algeria decided to sever relations with Morocco in August.

Among the regional organizations that have urged the two neighbors to engage in dialogue was the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which called on leaders in both countries to avert an unnecessary and potentially disastrous conflict.
