Rabat – Morocco’s Embassy inaugurated two honorary consulates in South Korea in the wake of the commemoration of the 46th anniversary of the Green March. One consulate opened in the city of Daegu while the other is situated in the city of Incheon. The consulates were opened on November 5 and 9 respectively.
The South Korean businessman Hyun Chang-Seung was appointed Honorary Consul of Morocco in Incheon.
He is also the chairman of Hands Corporation, the largest South Korean automotive manufacturing investor in Morocco.
As Morocco became amongst the leading countries in North Africa, its strategic location, and favorable climatic conditions prompted Hands Corporation company to invest a budget of MAD 4.3 billion ($450 million) in the construction of its new plant in Tangier.
Businessman and civil society actor Sung Gum-Hwa was appointed Honorary Consul in Daegu. He is also the president of the Moroccan-Korean Association.
The inauguration ceremony of the two honorary consulates was marked by a festive atmosphere in the presence of several political, economic, and cultural representatives.
During the opening ceremonies, Moroccan Ambassador to South Korea Chafik Rachadi, stressed the importance of the two inaugurations coinciding with the celebration of the Green March.
Morocco celebrated the 46th anniversary of the Green March on November 6.
The Moroccan diplomat highlighted that the newly opened honorary consulates aim to play a pivotal role in the constant development of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
He expressed Morocco’s desire to further consolidate cooperation in various fields and enhance exchange between political and economic actors.
Chang-Seung spoke on the occasion, noting that the significant celebration of the Green March is a source of pride for all Moroccans as a memory of reclaiming the southern provinces from Spanish colonial control.
Morocco’s Western Sahara region has since become a place of stability, progress and prosperity.
Honorary Consul Chang-Seung said he was proud of the appointment, welcoming the dynamic development Morocco is experiencing under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
Meanwhile, Sung Gum-Hwa reiterated his determination to contribute to strengthening bilateral ties between people from his country and Morocco especially through economic, tourism and cultural promotions.
He also expressed his readiness to give new impetus to cooperation opportunities between the two nations.
Relations between South Korea and Morocco are nearly sixty years old, with the two countries signing their first diplomatic agreements in 1962.
South Korea’s embassy in Morocco was the first South Korean diplomatic mission installed in the African continent.
Choi Jong-Kun, the Korean Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited Morocco for the first time in August and expressed his country’s willingness to further relations with Rabat.
