Fez – Morocco has reaffirmed its commitment to allocate efforts to enhance the fields of education, culture, and research.
Minister of National Education, Preschool Learning and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa announced Morocco’s support for “the Paris Declaration for the future of humanity and the planet.”
Benmoussa made the statements before the ongoing 41st General Conference in Paris from November 9-24.
The minister addressed UNESCO members in a General Policy Discussion, highlighting the efforts Morocco allocates to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and its ramifications across the field, particularly in education.
To assure herd immunity, Morocco has set plans to generalize free vaccination for residents aged 12 and above. On the economic level, the minister recalled the creation of a solidarity fund and the launch of a large-scale project of social protection, as well as ongoing government support and recovery plans.
The Global Education Meeting (2021 GEM) on November 10 resulted in the Paris Declaration, titled “A Global Call for Investing in the Futures of Education.”
The declaration highlights the need to intensify efforts to overcome the repercussions of the COVID-19 crisis on the field of education.
“We emphasize the urgency to tackle the educational crises and inequalities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the declaration reads.
The state members welcomed the SDG4-Education 2030 High-Level Steering Committee that was inaugurated on the same day of the declaration.
The paper expressed the members’ concern over the financial impact the crisis left on the education sector. Participants have emphasized “multilateral cooperation and multi-stakeholder engagement” as an efficient response to recover from the pandemic.
In addition to the emergency of reviving the educational sectors, the declaration reminded that education is “an investment that requires sustainable funding.” The declaration urges “all governments to develop strategies to increase resources for education.”
In this respect, the minister accentuated the efficiency of the Moroccan educational system during the pandemic, by adopting in-person and remote learning methods in a mixed way. The diplomat emphasized the kingdom was able to store a bank of videos and materials for all levels and fields, providing students with required materials to keep pace with their education and training.
The minister reiterated the country’s commitment to host the seventh International Conference on Adult Education (Confintea VII) in 2022.
