Rabat – King Mohammed VI Has expressed his gratitude to several Gulf leaders for their support of Morocco’s territorial integrity regarding the Western Sahara region. The Moroccan king sent messages to the capitals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the UAE, as well as two separate messages to Saudi Arabia.

On December 14, Gulf leaders reiterated their support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara region during a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC.) The 42nd session of the GCC’s top political summit saw its members voice their unwavering support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara conflict, with GCC Secretary-General Nayef Falah Mubarak Al Hajraf welcoming the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2602 that renewed MINURSO’s mandate in the region.

King Mohammed VI has responded to the outpouring of GCC support through a series of letters addressed to the leaders of the GCC countries. The Moroccan monarch sent a message to Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, expressing his “deep pride in the bonds of fraternity and sincere friendship” between the two countries’ royal palaces.

To Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Morocco’s king described Kuwait’s position as “boble and sincere” as he emphasized the unity between the two nation’s royal families and people. The king highlighted that Kuwait’s position on the Sahara “transcends any narrow calculation or economic interest,” as it is linked to essentials on “security and stability.”

To Omani Sultan Haitham Ben Tarek ben Taimur, King Mohammed VI wrote about his “pleasure to resume contact,” before thanking the sultan for his support at the GCC council. Fraternal relations between Oman and Morocco, the king wrote, are based on “solidarity, cooperation and mutual respect.”

King Mohammed VI personally emphasized his “great satisfaction at the bonds of sincere brotherhood and mutual esteem,” with Qatar and its Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani. Thanking the Qatari Emir for his support at the Supreme Council, Morocco’s monarch wished success to the Qatari royal palace and the “brotherly Qatari people.”

The Moroccan monarch additionally directed a message of thanks to UAE President and Emir of Abu Dhabi Cheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyane.  Describing the UAE’s “firm and total support” for Morocco’s sovereignty, King Mohammed VI expressed “pride in the personal bonds of sincere affection and mutual esteem,” between both countries, leaders and royal families.

In addition, Morocco’s royal palace sent two messages to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The first was addressed to Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saoud in his role as Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. The Moroccan king wished King Salman “health, happiness, prosperity and long life,” and thanked him for his continued support on the Western Sahara question.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdel Aziz al-Saoud received a separate message thanking him for his “clear support” as crown prince and in his role as Saudi Arabia’s vice-president and defense minister. King Mohammed VI stated he was “deeply touched by the clear and strong support,” expressed by the Saudis at the 42nd GCC Supreme Council.

Throughout King Mohammed VI’s messages to GCC leaders, he emphasized the firm and unchanging support of Morocco’s partners in the Gulf. He repeatedly stressed that Morocco’s bonds with these nations transcend common diplomacy and are built on mutual respect and deep ties between Morocco’s palace and the region’s royal families.

“The partnership between Morocco and the Gulf countries,” the king wrote to King Salman, “is not the product of cyclical interests or ephemeral calculations. Rather, it draws its strength from sincere faith in the community of destiny and the agreement of points of view concerning our common causes.”
