Fez – Morocco’s Atlas Lions football team ranked 28th in the recent FIFA Ranking updated today, December 23.

The new ranking shows that Morocco retained its position following FIFA’s previous rankings announced on November 19. With an overall score of 1529 points, Morocco gained four additional points, securing its position as the second-best football team in Africa.

Senegal, which is ranked as the 20th best team worldwide, tops the list of teams in Africa with a total score of 1561 points.

Algeria, the 29th best team worldwide, ascended to the third position in Africa’s best national teams, followed by Tunisia (30th) and Nigeria (36th).

Globally, Belgium leads the FIFA ranking as the best team in the world, followed by Brazil, France, England, and Argentina.

Italy ranked as the sixth-best global team, followed by Spain and Portugal.

Under the management of Vahid Halilhodzic, head coach of Morocco’s national team, the Atlas Lions delivered outstanding performances sealing crucial games in the road to Qatar’s World Cup competition. This also enhanced the squad’s FIFA ranking in recent months.

On November 12, Morocco dominated Sudan with a 3-0 score.

On November 16, Morocco bested Guinea with a 3-0 score.

With these victories, Atlas Lions moved to the play-off round of the 2022 Qatar’s World Cup qualifiers with an honorary record, scoring a well-deserved 18 points out of six games.

The national team is also ahead of star teams in the upcoming AFCON 2021. In this event, expected to take place between January 6 and February 7, 2022, in Cameroon, the Atlas Lions will clash with strong opponents in the group stage.

Morocco’s potential opponents in the AFCON 2021 group stage are Comoros, Gabon, and Ghana.
