Rabat – Morocco arrested on December 8 twenty-five ISIS-linked suspects in different, synchronized security operations.
The suspects were planning to carry out terrorist operations across Morocco, particularly targeting security servicesʼ headquarters, a Moroccan official told AFP on Saturday.
Security services carried out the operations in at least 17 cities.
Some of the suspects were already referred to the judiciary after the investigation was completed while others will be subject to the same procedure “later,” the official explained.
After searching the suspects’ houses, security services seized firearms, live ammunition, knives, documents about making explosive devices, as well as material glorifying and paying allegiance to ISIS.
AFP quoted their source as saying that the secrity operation is part of Morocco’s “continious efforts” to mitigate and combat terror risks.
The North African country has been intensifying efforts as part of its commitment to maintain high security vigilance against ISIS and other organized criminal networks.
On Friday, Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) announced the arrest of a 24-year old ISIS linked suspect near Rabat.
The arrest took place in collaboration with US intelligence agencies as well as Morocco’s security services, including the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) and the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
The suspect prepared digital content declaring his allegiance to the “emir” of ISIS and was planning to join conflict camps outside Morocco, BCIJ said.
The suspect also made two attempts to manufacture explosives.
Since 2002, Morocco’s security services have dismtanled over 2,009 terror cells, arrested over 3,353 people for their invovlement in terror activities, and aborted over 500 terror plots.
